Gilded Age Architecture Walking Tour

Sunday, May 5, 2024, 1:00 PM

Spend an hour with Woodlawn Architectural Historian Anthony Pellino exploring the bold personalities, cultural forces, and wonderful artistry of some of Woodlawn’s funerary masterpieces as we walk through the cemetery. Each talk will focus on a different aspect of artistry and design explained in terms of how patrons, designers, and artists make the decisions that go into a finished work.

This week’s tour will focus on architecture. The patrons, designers, and artisans of the Gilded Age consciously used design as a way to put themselves on equal footing with their European peers. This was a toweringly ambitious project which succeeded just as much due to the resources invested as the brilliance of the people involved. Join us at Woodlawn to explore some of the ways our designers and patrons used architecture both in their magnificent homes and their final resting places to solidify their place in society and history.

Memorial Day Flagging 2024

Saturday, May 18, 2024 through May 26, 2024.

Founded in 1863, The Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 8,500 individuals who bravely served our nation in the U.S. Armed Forces. Woodlawn has honored veterans for years by recruiting volunteers, including school groups, scouts, corporate teams, and service organizations from the local community to salute America’s heroes.

Each year, to thank those who answered the call, volunteers place flags on veterans’ gravesites in the lead-up to Memorial Day. Volunteers receive maps that pinpoint locations and a list of known servicemembers. A Woodlawn tradition, the yearly public event attracts hundreds of volunteers who make it a point to honor the bravest among us.

J.  Walker strutting down the street, Dorothy Parker raising a glass, and Cicely Tyson whispering to Miles Davis are all part of The Woodlawn Suite, Victor Goines’ 13 movement work celebrating the lives of New Yorkers now at rest within the historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
